Fulbrighter Lectures on Colonial Discourse
On May 27, Fulbright Scholar Ivan Rosales-Montes presented a lecture entitled "The Hybridization of Colonialism" at the American Studies Center at the University of Bahrain. The lecture focused on the economic development and the nationalist movements that emerged in the Middle East at the end of WWI. He also discussed the historical relationship between the U.S. and Middle Eastern oil producing countries, as well as Islamic activism in the aftermath of September 11. The presentation was followed by a discussion, during which students and faculty members discussed the impacts of colonialism in Middle Eastern history, the role of media and other institutions in shaping the American discourse regarding the Middle East, and the future of the Middle East.
