International Women's Day DVC

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the US Embassy invited 35 students and professors to hold a digital video conference(DVC) with Sarah Gordon, former American assistant Public Affairs Officer in Kabul now Paris Embassy Vice Consul. In March 2003, Sarah Gordon entered the Foreign Service as APAO at Kabul Embassy (Afghanistan), where her duties in Kabul included supervising educational and cultural programs to strengthen the role of women in Afghanistan.

Prior to the DVC, Deputy Chief of Mission Dr. Susan Ziadeh, welcomed the guests and congratulated them on the occasion, as Bahrain is moving towards further Democratic reforms, especially by encouraging Bahraini women to take part in the upcoming municipal and parliamentary elections. Following the DCM’s welcome speech, Ms. Gordon and the students were engaged in the following issues:

- The evolving role of women in Afghan society

- The impact of education in stimulating women's involvement

- The role the US. Mission has in involving Afghan women

The 45-minute conference witnessed excellent brain-stimulating questions from the students to Ms. Gordon, “I was incredibly impressed by the questions--politely framed but probing and provocative”. The success of the DVC was evident, as questions to Ms. Gordon continued beyond the allocated time, in addition to most of students and professors stayed after the event to express the usefulness of such a program to their political analysis or critical thinking classes.

The students and professors were from University of Bahrain, Royal University for Women and AMA International University of Bahrain.
